Why did I decide to stop pirating and start paying for services.
If you’ve been following me, you’ll know that I’ve written technical topics that are both dry, so I’m considering writing something that is both non-technical. This is a subject that I came up with, PIRACY!
Piracy harms the majority of the entertainment industry as well as the majority of large corporations. Imagine, will people pay for a movie when they can get it for free?
Let’s face it: we’ve all illegally downloaded something at some point in our lives. It makes no difference if it’s an album, websites, games, or movies. I used to pirate everything I could find on the internet. It became less important and more annoying as technology progressed, and I no longer bother.
When I started pirating?
I began pirating during my school days because most services in India are exorbitantly expensive and confusing. Since I don’t have a source of revenue, it is extremely difficult to obtain a paid service. So, I began to look for alternatives and I ended up pirating softwares, games, movies and music.
What was the real issue with paid media services?
- Ridiculously priced.
- Failing to provide a positive user experience.
- Why should I spend money on something that I can get for free?
What companies did to stop pirating?
When digital downloads first became popular, media companies were fast to experiment with various types of DRM. Many of these DRMs imposed absurd limitations on the equipment you might use, or worse, locked it to the hardware and software.
On the Software side, most of the services are cloud based application where the users are forced to connect to the internet to update/ activate the software.
Why I went legit?
I’m not going to sugarcoat taking the moral high ground in order to put an end to piracy. In reality, the main reason I stopped pirating is that piracy now requires far too many measures. It is now preferable to download anything from a legal source rather than pirate it. In fact, I hardly even noticed that I’d stopped pirating — it just kind of happened
With the Growth of Smartphones, people began to use the services more often, resulting in India becoming a HUGE market for entertainment industry. To draw customers, large corporations have reduced their costs through enticing deals and really attractive discounts. Most software comes with student discounts provided you’re from a verified institution.
Companies and Software became easy
It may have taken media companies much longer than necessary, but it is now extremely simple to download anything you want, to any smartphone, for a fair price. These downloads sync through accounts, making them available anywhere. They have user interfaces that are easy to understand and use. Basically, it’s now easier to legally download anything than it is to pirate it.
Of course, companies continue to do shockingly dumb things that unintentionally promote piracy. DRM is always a pain in the neck, and it took a while to break my habit of having to own anything. But I’m glad I did. I have less clutter and less stuff in my Hard drive that I would never read, watch, play, or listen to.
